Only 3.6 percent of men will remain faithful to their women. At least according to the controversial "Smith and Doe," two guys who wish to remain anonymous except for revealing that they work in the motion-picture industry and live in Southern California. A sampling of their "unspoken truths" aimed at turning women into "Smith and Doe-educated women":
--"If a man is given the opportunity to engage in sexual relations with an attractive female, with no fear of getting caught and little risk of transmitted diseases, he will do so. Always. Without fail. There are no exceptions."
--"Man spends his life in one of two basic states: loaded or unloaded."
--"A prostitute is the perfect one-nighter."
--"Men are attracted to beautiful young women.... If you saw your man at the office when you are not present, you would become physically ill."
Also included are detailed guidelines for monitoring your man's financial activities (see third item, above), "surefire methods" for getting your man to confess to cheating (past or present), and a 75-question fidelity test ("Does your man play his answering machine messages in front of you?"). They conclude with a "condensed guide to training your man," a more sexually focused takeoff on the ideas in How to Make Your Man Behave in 21 Days or Less Using the Secrets of Professional Dog Trainers.

The authors, who, the publisher reveals, work in the motion-picture industry, have assumed pseudonyms for this work, and readers will quickly understand why. This is their chief message: "The only reason your man is with you is because at this moment... he... believes... he simply can't do any better." Their basic conviction, quoting from Wilhelm Reich, is that the male of the species is a sexual animal who seeks "complete and repeated genital gratification." They see him as a gun, either loaded or unloaded according to whether he is hoping to have an orgasm or has just had one; women, they maintain, can trust a man in the latter state, but otherwise they cannot. The authors point out that the real danger zones for a woman are her husband's office, his "business trips" and bachelor parties, about which he can be expected to deny every occurrence if questioned. After presenting a test for fidelity, Smith and Doe offer a few words of advice for women on winning the battle of the sexes. Females who find the content equally frivolous might recall that many a true word is spoken in jest. Yet the generalizations are so sweeping and exaggerated here as to lead many readers to believe that the authors are talking only about themselves.
